A franchisee is a powerful and effective process that includes the marketing, sale and distribution of products as well as services. The franchisor licenses the trademarks and techniques of doing business and performs the distribution of products or services through his associated dealers.

The APA, American Poolplayers Association was established as the National Pool League in 1979 by professional poolplayers Larry Hubbart and Terry Bell. It became the American Poolplayers Association in 1981. Both Larry and Terry were aware of the popularity of the sport, but knew that, different from other sports, there was no existing recreational league system. The American Poolplayers Association runs the largest and most exciting amateur tournaments in North America.  Every year thousands of APA members visit and compete in these tournaments.

Today, the American Poolplayers Association is also called as the Canadian Poolplayers Association in Canada and has grown to more than 250,000 members and possesses more members than all other National Leagues combined. The League is administered locally by a network of Franchise Operators. The League conducts weekly plays with both 8-Ball and 9-Ball team formats offered.

At the national level, the APA guarantees more than 1 million dollars in national tournament prize money. This consists of the 500,000 dollars APA 8-Ball National Team Championships, the 200,000 dollars APA 8-Ball Classic, the 100,000 dollars APA 9-Ball National Team Championship, the 100,000 dollars APA 9-Ball Shootout, and the MiniMania tournaments, which paid nearly 220,000 dollars in the 2004 season’s National Team Championships.

The American Poolplayers Association that has been listed in Entrepreneur Magazine's Annual Franchise 500 since the year 1993 has been organizing pool leagues since 1979.
